TA _ LECTURER’S STRATEGIES IN TEACHING SPEAKING TO 2nd SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT STKIP SOE
ABSTRACT
The objective of this research is to know the lecturer’s strategies to improve the 2nd semester student’s speaking ability. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data of this research was strategies that used by lecturer in speaking of 2nd semester students. The instrument was interview used structured-interview. The researcher obtained the data by recording and field note technique. The finding showed that lecturer used strategy in teaching speaking to students. The strategies used by lecturer were role play and creative tasks. Role play was the appropriate strategy to answer the common problems when lecturer teaching speaking. The lecturer applied role play to train the students speaking ability and make students can learn about techniques to speak. This strategy can help students with their personal problems such as pronunciation, vocabulary, feel afraid and feel nervous.
Another strategy that used by lecturer to improve students speaking ability was creative tasks. In this strategy, make students trying their concentration focuses when produce something and make them to be more active in class. The strategy was called dominant strategy because this strategy made students can work independently. The students can make presentation like individual presentation or group presentation and they can give comment or review toward what they present such as tourist attractions, health or culture.
