TA _ English Teachers’ Problems and Strategies in Teaching English to Students with Different English Competence (A case of two English teachers of SMA Kristen 1 SoE)
Abstract
This research is aimed to describe the problems faced by English teachers and the strategies used by the teachers to solve the problems found in teaching students with different English competence. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The data were taken from interview using a recorder. The subjects of this study were two English teachers of SMA Kristen 1 SoE. Based on the result of analyzing the data, it is revealed that there are five problems found by teacher in teaching English to students who have different English competence. The problems ranged from students’ ability to do their assignments after learning English, students’ understanding toward English material, English classroom situation, the use of dictionary in English learning process and lazy students in learning English. To deal with the problems, the teacher used five strategies to overcome the problems. Those are giving additional assignments, asking friends and group working, delivering detail explanation in English material, repeating after teacher said, grouping students and discussing English difficult words together and break up time for awhile. In conclude, teaching English is not an easy thing for English teachers, moreover in teaching students with different competence. English teacher will find problems if teacher face students with different English competence. That is why, teacher needs to prepare appropriate strategies as the problem solving in teaching English to students with different ability.
