TA _ PROBLEMS FACED BY INTERPRETER IN TRANSLATING LOCAL EXPRESSIONS AND THEIR TRATEGIES TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS
Abstract
The aim of this study was described the problems faced by interpreter in translating local expressions and their strategies to overcome the problems. The participants of utilized data in this research were interpreters who were involved in TTS regency when translating local expression especially Dawan language. The data were collected using interview to two interpreters, interview stage was covered by transcribe data, data analysis and conclusion. The findings show that there were two problems faced by interpreter in translating local expressions especially Dawan language included: unfamiliar with cultural expressions of place visited and failure to achieve the equivalence meaning. In addition, the strategies of translation applied by interpreters to solve the challenge of interpreting Dawan language included: Borrowing words, adaptation, literal translation and gesture or body language. Therefore, recommendation from researcher that in translating or interpreting a sentence or text from source language to target language that was had different cultural background, an interpreter must have enough knowledge related to the cultural terms in order the massage delivered could be accepted by the target listener.
