TA _ THE USE OF TALE STORY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING COMPETENCE
ABSTRACT
This research was conducted in order to improve students’ speaking competence through tale stories in the eighth grade students of SMP Kristen 3 Soe. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method to find out students’ abilities in their speaking. This research was conducted in two cycles and collected the data use pre-test, post-test, and observation check-list. The post-test of the 1st cycle, the mean score was 61,20, and 5 (20,83%) students achieved the minimum criterion. In the post-test of the 2nd cycle, the mean score improved to be 79,16% and all students achieved the established criterion, which was 75. The N-gain score was 0,64 in the pretest became 0,88 in the post-test. It could be seen from the results that the students’ average score from the pre-test was 35, post-test cycle I was 75, and post-test cycle II was 79,16. Moreover, in cycle II, there were 5 students who got a score of 75. So the result of the research showed that teaching speaking through tale stories to the eighth grade students of SMP Kristen 3 Soe could improve their speaking ability. It was advisable that English teachers could apply tale stories in improve the students’ speaking ability.
