TA _ An Analysis of Grammatical Error on Facebook Statuses
Abstract
This study analyzes grammatical errors found in Facebook statuses written in English by Indonesian Facebook users. The research primary objective is to identify and categorize the types of grammatical errors and to determine which errors are
most frequent. The study focuses on grammatical error related to verb tense, subject-verb agreement, pronoun use, articles, and prepositions. The data were collected from fourty facebook statuses as object of the study which frequently post in English on Facebook, and it was analyses using descriptive qualitative. Based on the findings, it was found that errors can be categorized into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Omission error is the omit of words or phrases that should be present in a sentence. Addition error is error that can be identified by the presence of an item which must not appear in a sentence or utterance. Misformation error is an error in the shape of a structure and missordering is an error in the order of words in a sentence. The results revealed that misformation is the most prevalent error types, especially concerning verb tenses and articles. Misformation errors are usually caused by limited knowledge of English writing skills, as well as the use of language translators who may not always understand the accurate context. These
findings enhance our understanding of the linguistic challenges faced in informal digital communication and underscore the need for improved grammar awareness on social media platforms like Facebook.
