TA _ Applying Process Approach to Improve Students’ Descriptive Essay Writing
Abstract
This study aimed to improve students’ descriptive essay writing skills at SMK Negeri 2 Soe by applying process approach. The objective was to assess the improvement in writing skills and address students’ challenges in descriptive writing. The study used Classroom Action Research (CAR), working with the regular English teacher to collect data from 18 students of Grade XI A MPLB in SMK Negeri 2 Soe. The process approach was implemented through two cycles, each focusing on different writing stages: planning, drafting, editing, and revising. The results showed a significant improvement in students’
writing skills. Initially, only 5% of students passed the minimum score required (KKM) in the pre-test. After implementing the process approach, 83% passed the KKM in the first post-test, and 100% passed in the second post-test. Based on these findings, process approach effectively helped students get the best version of their descriptive essay draft as well as face some challenges in writing such as lack of ideas and lack of understanding on writing process. The strategy also increased students’ knowledge, self-confidence, and ability to have their ideas written down optimally. In conclusion, this research
successfully give positive impacts for students, especially their improvement in writing descriptive essay after implementing the process approach in the learning process as well as to overcome students’ problems in learning descriptive writing.
