TA _ THE USE OF GUIDED WRITING STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ DESCRIPTIVE WRITING COMPETENCE IN BASIC WRITING CLASS
ABSTRACT
This study aimed at explaining the improvement of students’ writing competence in descriptive text through implementation of guided writing strategy. The weaknesses covered incompetence in using grammatical pattern, vocabulary mastery, punctuation, writing organization, generic structure and lexicogrammatical feature of descriptive text as well as low-motivated and boredom in writing. Classroom action research (CAR) was the method of the study. The 2nd semester students of English Department at Institut Pendidikan Soe as the participants who were taking guided writing course. Writing test and observation checklist were the instruments applied. The result of pretest showed only 1 (7%) of 14 students reached the minimum standard score (KKM) which was 60 and the mean score reached 33,21. The result of posttest I showed insignificant improvement where only 6 (42,85%) of the students reached the minimum standard score and the mean score was 49,29. However, the result of posttest II showed improvement where (78,57%) of the students reached the minimum standard score. The result showed that students’ writing ability was improved in grammatical, vocabulary mastery, ideas development, punctuation, paragraph organization and generic structure of description. The results indicated that guided writing strategy was effective to enhance students’ performance in writing descriptive text.
