TA _ IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY BY USING DEBATE TECHNIQUE FOR THE 11th GRADES OF SMA KRISTEN MANEK TO KUATNANA ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018
Abstract
This study is designed students’ speaking ability by using debate technique for
the eleventh grades of SMA Kristen Manek To Kuatnana. The objective of this study is to
describe the students of SMA Kristen Manek To Kuatnana speaking ability after being
taught using debate technique. This study is classroom action research that was done in
two cycles. The data collection was done using observation checklist and test. The data
from the observation were analyzed descriptively. Data from test were analyzed
quantitatively, and then described qualitatively. The subject of this study was the 11th
grades, IPA1 class of SMA Kristen Manek To Kuatnana. The participants were 24
students consisted of 16 girls and 8 boys. The result of this study showed that using
debate technique can improve students’ speaking skill. It was proven by students’ test
score. The students’ pre-test average score was 52.2 and post test average score was
69.83. In the second cycle students got 78.95. Therefore, debate technique is an
appropriate technique used to improve students’ speaking ability. Hopefully, the result of
this study provides helpful information for English teachers to consider the best way in
teaching speaking.
